INTENTION

Butterflies In Your Path is a walking-based human connection experience created exclusively for the Unfinished Festival 2022 in Bucharest, Romania. As part of the festival, participants needed to walk approximately 26 minutes between two main venues: from Bulandra Theater to the Romanian Radio Hall. Rather than treating this transition as idle time, Butterflies In Your Path invited people to turn that walk into an intentional journey of connection.

What happened

Before leaving the first venue, participants received two connection-cards: one displayed only one half of a visual symbol and the other contained an intimate question about life's paths, crossings, or transformations, related to the theme of the festival. Participants were encouraged to search for the person holding the other half of their symbol. Once they matched, they were invited to walk together toward the next venue, using the question in the card as a guide for dialogue. Upon arrival, they used the second card to record their "butterfly moment" — any sensation, thought, or realization that blossomed during the walk.

From the artist Butterflies In Your Path was a way to explore walking as a ritual for expanding emotional landscapes. Chance encounters played a role as artistic and transformative media that subverted expectations of an everyday path. Festivals with such high attendance, such was the case with Unfinished, can also foster situations of solitude: if attending it alone, for example, it can be difficult to find your crowd, to find ways to start conversations or to feel included in already established groups. If you’re attending with your own friends, it can be just as hard to mingle with other groups and make new connections. The city of Bucharest and the already defined paths between the festival venues showed me that there was so much to explore when it came to the power of urban movement to foster intimacy between strangers. Through the simple yet profound acts of walking, looking, and speaking, participants from diverse cultural, racial, and generational backgrounds discovered that — even amidst differences — we remain potent mirrors for one another.
